The Sculpture

Kevin, known for his wickedly humorous take on folklore and society, bases this work on The Musicians of Bremen, a Brothers Grimm folktale. It tells the story of four domestic animals who, after a lifetime of hard work, was mistreated by their masters. This is conceptualised as a procession of a donkey, a cockeral, a cat and a dog – an arpeggio or ”broken chord”

Kevin Brand’s work is distinguished by his use of non-traditional sculptural materials to make strong but increasingly nuanced comments on aspects of South African social history and life. His particular interest is to make work that is accessible to the larger community, and locate it in a public arena.
